This song really set the tone for what the album would be about and how the sessions would (ideally) go. When Ken and I sat through our pre-production sessions, chewing the fat about the songs, life, or other things, we somehow agreed that it was important to capture the gentle playfulness that was present in many of the songs. It seemed most crucial to capture that with this song. There is a spontaneity to the background vocals because a good part of them were recorded two days before mastering the album. Was that supposed to be our little secret, Ken?

I can't offer you
cashmere or a string of pearls
I can't offer you the finest things in this world
But baby, I can make you smile
I can make you laugh, I can make you dance
Just like a little child
I can't take you
to Paris, I can't give you wings
I can't take you to places you've never ever seen
But baby, I can make you smile
I can make you laugh, I can make you dance
Just like a little child
We can ring around
the rosy from morning 'til night
Play games, hold hands, go dancing in the moonlight
We'll climb our way to the top of the stars
We can hold each other as we close our eyes
I'll kiss your cheek and whisper lullabies
We'll drift off to sleep like children in the back of the car
I can't buy you
an elephant fifty feet high
Or make a million dollars fall from out of the sky
But baby, I can make you smile
I can make you laugh, I can make you dance
Just like a little child
I can't offer you
cashmere or a string of pearls
I can't offer you the finest things in this world
But baby, I can make you smile
I can make you laugh, I can make you dance
Just like a little child
