This song was started after driving home one night from Brantford during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve in 1993. I was going to record it on my first CD and also tried pitching it to up-and-coming country musician Beverly Mahood. Instead, I let the song ferment a bit and gave Ken a crack at producing it. I'm out of my league rhythmically in this one- I'm hammering away at a straight thumb-and-strum pattern while Ken and Matthew are whirling about in great rhythmic gusts all around me.

Woke up at the
crack of dawn, my van is packed and loaded
I gather all my bags and hit the open road
No other drivers in sight
Driving into the daylight
Don't know where I will land tonight
Seems like each
path I choose turns out to be the wrong one
The road I thought was short turns out to be the long one
My eyes are open wide
Still God, I'm blind, I'm blind
Don't know what I am going to find
Chorus:
With my heart as my copilot
With my heart as my copilot
I will search, I will ride, I will roam
Will my heart earn it's wings
With the love that it brings
I won't rest 'til my heart makes it home
The weather forecast
says a fog will be descending
The winds won't ever cease, the snows will be unending
No matter how hard I've tried
I can't run, I cannot hide
Into this blizzard I shall ride
Chorus
Don't say the end
is drawing nearer
I refuse to check my rear view mirror
I keep on driving faster
I'm flirting with disaster
Just up ahead I see the road that I am after
Chorus
